point counterpoint

April 11th, 2008

This is an interesting counterpoint to my last point. While I still think the Newsweek article was misguided, I also think that there is reason to question the quality information found on the internet. This site takes that critique it to an extreme.

some people just don’t understand

March 23rd, 2008

I found this article on a news blog I started reading recently ( Hacker News ). The author rants about how the internet has no future in 1995. Seriously, some people just don’t understand the future even when it hits them in the face.

This is both extremely sad and extremely bizarre. A man in Australia built a robot that he used to kill himself.

I finally did it, with the help of Maria and Joram, I am now on twitter. At the moment it feels more like updating my facebook status. I need to spend some time looking for some people to follow. Or join so I can follow you!

the internet is fascinating

March 10th, 2008

I have always been fascinated by what I will call the underground internet. When I say underground internet, I am thinking of the internet peoples that thrive on cutting-edge, ueber-insiderish, vaguely funny internet memes. Recently while trying to look up some internet slang (fish feed - and I still have no clue what it means), I came across a site YTMND aka ‘You’re the man now dog!’. This is a clear example of underground internet. On one hand some of it is funny, but at the same time weird. The namesake of the site is a picture of Sean Connery with a sound bit saying, ‘You’re the man now dog!’. Although some of the stuff is about as easy to understand as a 4chan board, other stuff is pretty hilarious.

wikipedia might have TMI

February 27th, 2008

I was searching for an old SNL Blossom parody the other day. I seem to recall Chris Farley as Blossom. In an attempt to track it down, I noticed a Wikipedia entry detailing various parodies. A sentence very close to a reference to Blossom, but not what I was looking for, had a link that caught my attention. That link was to coin slot. I just had to follow the link. After clicking I was shocked to read the entry. To me its a strange commentary on our world today, or at the very least a reality check of whats on Wikipedia.

And I am still searching for the Blossom parody…

for the conspiracy theorist in us all

February 19th, 2008

I was reading one of my favorite blogs the other day when I came across a very interesting post.  Evidently there is a site out there, go figure, that is all about sharing ‘confidential’ documents with the world. From what I have read so far, it is more or less a whistleblower site. You’ve got something that shows how nasty governments or corporations are you will want to post to the site: Wikileaks. Due to a recent injunction, the link you might notice is being served via a “Christmas Island” (.cx) domain name. I would highly recommend the reading on the recent court case shutting the site down and the background. Fascinating.

dinner and a play

February 4th, 2008

Kelly and I did two things that I would recommend to anybody interested in an evening on the town. We started with dinner at Vincent, which is probably one of the better meals I have had in awhile. The meal was fancy; blue prawns as an appetizer, Beef Fricassee for the entree (complemented by a bottle of Ladera Cab) and rounded off with coffee and Louis XV cake.

Next it was off to Peer Gynt at the Guthrie. As usual the production was stellar. Everything was great: the actors, story, stage and all.  The story was intense, and somehow fitting for mid-winter. Deep introspection of the meaning of self was the main topic. As usual I highly recommend.
